Success Spotlight: Teacher Creativity Shines in Texas Middle School Math Classrooms
See how Brandy Williams and Melissa Lugo use high-quality instructional materials while maintaining agency and creativity.
Success Spotlight
Teachers are the heart and soul of any school district. Their day-to-day efforts and endless quest to do what is best for their students are what makes or breaks school success.
Phonisha Hawkins, Middle School Math Specialist, and Robyn Carrier, Director of Middle School Curriculum, both of Spring Independent School District in Houston, Texas, couldn’t agree more. Not only have they facilitated teacher and student math success in Spring ISD’s middle school math classrooms, but they spotlight their teachers’ efforts on Twitter feeds that read like a constant celebration of excellence!
That’s why we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to spotlight two teachers (among the many incredible educators) from Spring ISD’s middle school math classrooms. Brandy Williams, 6th Grade Math Teacher at Bailey Middle School, and Melissa Lugo, 7th Grade Math Teacher at Spring Leadership Academy, have both taken on the challenge of implementing a new curriculum with the Texas Math Solution while maintaining their own creativity, enthusiasm, and student-centered perspective.
Creative Teachers Know No Bounds
Mathematics can be an intimidating subject for many students, especially during emotionally turbulent middle school years, so it’s our honor to spotlight the teacher creativity that is turning students into “math people” each and every day.
Mrs. Williams and Ms. Lugo are just the tip of the iceberg for math excellence in the middle school math classrooms of Spring ISD.
“Our students are making so much progress,” Ms. Carrier states. “Leaps and bounds! And it’s all thanks to the teachers who are digging into the math, internalizing the lessons, and showcasing their creativity.”
And we couldn’t agree more. Amazing results happen because of amazing teachers. Kudos to the middle school math teachers and coaches of Spring ISD!
